Baby It's Cold Outside

I have never been a Nascar fan, but I will swear my Mom has mastered an event that should be considered for competition. The Arctic Snow Plow 500 in Reverse. I don't believe I have ever gone in reverse gear that fast!

This little piece of equipment is called a Rhino.  I believe it is a Yamaha product and a dreamy addition for any man's toy chest.  Even without a heater the plastic cover helps contain heat from the engine making the cab quite comfy.

Ho Ho Ho!

Meowy Christhmasth

Eeny-meeny & Mo

My gift to Greg

Today, yes, three days before Christmas I finally hear what the perfect gift for my husband would be. He purchased a smaller pickup for his commute to his new job and the only thing missing to make it perfect is....cruise control.

Thank God they weren't in big demand this year. I was able to grant his wish and I think from the photos you can see he is thrilled!?

2008 Decorations

I have gotten away with not putting up an actual Christmas tree for the last couple of years. I cannot really say that I miss the process of the whole putting it up event. This year since I will be leaving town and I do feel obligated to make our home seasonal for Greg I have a few EASY decorations that I think really spruce up the place.

I took a few minutes to actually make our wreaths for the door. Thanks to some inspiration from Martha Stewart.

Threw up some decorations on the mirror.

Decorated the top of the entertainment center with my new nativity scene.

Red bows dress up anything nicely. Notice the bows on the lampshade behind Mr. Mo.

My wish list

An old school chalk board with wood frame, no fancy magnetic, porcelin covered new age stuff (3' x 2').

James Avery remembrance rings. White sapphire, Ruby and Citrine. Mine and Greg's birthstones and the month of our wedding (silver, of course).
Not really sure what kind I would like but this looks cute.

Oh yea, and...

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? I prefer wrapped packages. I like wrapping them and unwrapping them.

2. Real tree or Artificial? Artificial . I think I remember having a real tree once at my Mom's. I haven't put up 'the' Christmas tree in a couple of years (it's just too much work). I have found the greatest decorations are very simple and will be easy to store. Red bows. I have small ones on picture frames and big ones on lamp shades. Dresses up the place nicely.

3. When do you put up the tree? Generally right after Thanksgiving.

4. When do you take the tree down? One year I remember it being close to Valentine's Day, I am not joking

5. Do you like eggnog? NO, it has the word e-g-g in it...gross!!

6. Favorite gift received as a child? Most memorable was a new-fangled computer gismo that you put a memory card into and it asked you questions. I really think it was just a cleverly disguised educational tool.

7. Hardest person to buy for? Santa. Man, what do you get greatest gift giver ever??

8. Easiest person to buy for? Myself, of course!

9. Do you have a nativity scene? Yes, I do. I consider a nativity scene the most beautiful of all Christmas decorations. I have contemplated collecting them.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail Christmas cards. I just consider it part of the season. The season isn't complete if I don't mail cards, bake and spend one evening driving around listening to Christmas music looking at Christmas lights.

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? I don't recall this being an issue. I am grateful for any gift. Afterall, giving a gift is the cause for the season. Humanity received the greatest gift from God and that started it all.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? The best are the old claymation Rudolf and Frosty movies...I LOVE them! Oh, my...I have several others:

Home for the Holidays - typical dysfunctional family. Holiday gatherings are all about the fighting...hee hee hee!
Home Alone - Non-stop laughing
Christmas Story - You will put your eye out
Elf - I consider this a classic

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? As I get older I am getting worse and worse on this. We adopt an "Angel" from a tree at work and I get that shopping done (usually in one trip). Greg and I usually decide what we want and go get it ourselves. Other than that I would rather spend a dinner, movie or other activity with family.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Sure I have, and I will bet that I have also received a recycled gift...GO GREEN, right?

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Homemade cookies

16. Lights on the tree? Colored. I consider the holiday a celebration for children. When I do put up a tree I like it whimsical with toys and lots of bright colorful items. It is reminicent for me.

17. Favorite Christmas song? The First Noel is my favorite song. I do have a favorite memory relating to songs. My sister Nicole used to sing, "Silent night, Nicole-y night...". She was sure it was written about her. Speaking of Nicole singing Christmas songs, I also giggle thinking of her singing "Santa Clause is comingggg to TOOOWWWN."

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Well, I LOVE LOVE LOVE to travel and when I do am at a family members' home. I only wish I could get my hubby to enjoy traveling places other than Vegas. Don't get me wrong I like Vegas. I WILL spend a Christmas in New York City someday and would love for Greg to be with me.

19. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer? Absolutely! That would be un-American or as my Dad would say, "it must be a lacking in your upbringing."

20. Angel on the tree top or a star? I like to angels on top of trees, purely for a traditional feel. I like creative toppers like cowboy hats and bows. I usually put a snowman on top of mine.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Christmas day

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? I swear the clocks speed up. There just isn't enough time to get it all done.

23. Favorite ornament theme or color? See #16. I also like white lights with lots of natural decorations like pine cones, berries and red cardinals.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? Lasagna

25. What is your favorite thing about the holidays? My time off to relax

Merry Christmas, to you!

Yummy!!

I made the best cream of broccoli soup EVER! Thanks to my Aunt Louise for sharing the recipe. Got to use my fancy-schmancy kitchen power tool (immersion blender) on this one - thanks again Mom.

Little Debbie Swiss Rolls are EVIL...

not only are they fattening, they include saturated fat AND trans fat, you know the consumable plastic that most products are attempting to remove. I must confess that I can (and have) binge on this item. It's nothing for me to polish off a box, that is six, two-cake packages, all by myself on the way home from the store. Remember this is a confession, I am not bragging. Anyone who knows me is VERY aware of the fact that I do enjoy food (to an extreme) and I don't attempt to hide it either.

Since I do have limits and usually stop at the cellophane wrapper and cardboard box I noticed something that I took advantage of and am recommending it to anyone else that spends a fortune on magazines.

On the back of the box there was and advertisement (click for online ordering) for magazine subscriptions for $5 each; some of them up to a year. And they are actually magazines that I buy from time to time. At this price why pass it up.

I thought it would be another great gift idea. The only issue with this is that you will actually need to buy a $1.00+ box of the snacks because they want the original order blank.
If you are ordering them for yourself use the link above and you can send it to youself and pay with a credit/debit card without the orginal order blank.

I LOVE a sale (+ coupons)

If you like candles, or might consider giving them as a gift for Christmas, or maybe you want to stock up now for other gift-giving opportunities then you should RUSH to Bath & Body Works before Sunday, December 7th.

Slatkin & Co candles are on sale. They are usually $19.50 and are discounted to $10. To get an even better deal when you purchase any item you will receive a coupon for $10 off a $30 purchase.

First, I purchased three manicure/pedicure kits that are regularly $18 and were on sale for $5 each. I had them rang up separately to get three $10 coupons.

Then I purchased, three sets of three Slatkin $10 candles for three $30 transactions and used the coupons against each transaction.

My total purchases came to $81.18 and if I had purchased all of it at regular price it would have been $248.46.

With each transaction I earned more $10 coupons that I do plan to use this week.

YEAH me!!

My husband does not have four feet

Because they are bunched up, and may not be recognizable, let me solve the mystery for you. These are Greg's socks. Can anyone tell me how bunched up socks ever get clean? And you know they never dry completely when they are washed like this.

And yes, there are two pair (four socks) that are on the floor next to Greg's side of the bed. Now, you and I know that socks do not have the ability to procreate or reproduce.

I can promise you that Greg is aware that we do have a location to deposit dirty clothes. It has been in the same location for many years. One time I even tried buying him his very own clothes basket and placed it in the exact location of the socks in the photo. Sometimes the clothes made it in the basket, but most of the time they were 'in the vicinity'. Other than giving me something else to trip over this supposed solution to the issue didn't last long.

Why would his socks be the only item that never makes it to the laundry basket? I cannot answer that...it also perplexes me. I guess this is one of those marriage mysteries that will never be solved.

Please also notice the phone charger cord that the cats will probably play with because it resembles something that they should destroy. Greg will be angry with them and say mean things about them, but he is the one that left it there.

Veterans' Day Thanks

Every veteran should know that I am grateful EVERY day for the sacrifices of their service to our nation. Today just happens to be the official day to honor them.

No matter their personal beliefs, religious background or political affiliation, when called to duty these veterans serve our country so that future generations may reap every freedom and opportunity this GREAT country has to offer.

My thanks to my Grandfather, Dad, Bob, Uncles Willie and Dalton for their service. I am filled with pride to have friends and aquaintances that have also served. To every one, I am proud to know you and appreciate all that you have contributed.

"He, he, look like, he, look like...he look like a man."

I LOVE old Mad TV reruns, especially the Ms. Swan skits...

Randomness

  • I am not sure how Monkey Bread got its name, but I made some for work yesterday. It was really easy and quite delicious.

  • My Mo cat insists on drinking running water from the bathtub. He cries for it???

  • Greg is working evening shift and still loving his new job.

  • I am starting to wonder if winter will ever come :p

  • I would love to be a professional errand girl. And then I would like to have someone take care of all of my errands.

Don't be so selfish

If you haven't already cast your ballot please make your choice an unselfish one.

I am no longer going to consider how a candidate will help me. I voted for my country and the way things should be. I haven't for one second thought about what either of these candidates can do for me. I think it would be silly to think that either one of them will actually impact me as an individual.

I want to vote for a country that will continue in the path of prosperity for those that are willing to work hard and make sacrifices. I voted for a country that allows those that work hard to be successful. Gender, religion or race should never play a part in YOUR success as long as YOU earned it. There is no one that is 'owed' or 'due' anything from this country or it's government.

I was blessed to be born in a country that allows me every freedom, right and opportunity to make my own way. I can choose to work hard or not, but I also believe that I should live the life that I decide to provide myself (whatever that choice may be).

Good ole Abe Lincoln

* You cannot help the poor, by destroying the rich.
* You cannot strengthen the weak, by weakening the strong.
* You cannot bring about prosperity, by discouraging thrift.
* You cannot lift the wage earner up, by pulling the wage payer down.
* You cannot further the brotherhood of man, by inciting class hatred.
* You cannot build character and courage, by taking away people's initiative and independence.
* You cannot help people permanently, by doing for them what they could and should, do for themselves.

Don't forget to vote!!

Today on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read "Vote Obama, I need the money." I laughed.
Once in the restaurant my server had on a "Obama 08" tie, again I laughed as he had given away his political preference--just imagine the coincidence.
When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need--the homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight.
I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I 've decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was grateful.
At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient needed money more.
I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.

I am so happy for Greg now that he is working in a place that truly embraces his beliefs in what a police officer can do for their community. The value based program made the local news when Terrell PD recently adopted it.

Posted on October 24, 2008 in Highland Village Weekly
HVPD Receives International Community Policing Award
The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) has selected the Highland Village Police Department to receive a major international award for its community policing efforts with its innovative Value Based Policing.

On November 12, 2008, Police Chief Ed O'Bara will receive the 2008 Community Policing Award at the annual IACP Conference in San Diego, CA. HVPD's Value Based Policing will be featured at the conference in a community-policing workshop for other law enforcement professionals.

The Highland Village Police Department's "Value Based Policing" is an innovative, easily adaptable and cost effective way to focus daily performance of Patrol Officers on activities that fully support and strengthen the policing expectations of our community. One of the greatest benefit of the model is that it fully focuses patrol attention on the prevention of crime and encourages officers to actively seek and engage in opportunities that involve positive interactions with citizens.

Not So Productive

I am recovering from something and still don't feel well.
It could have been my reunion celebration last weekend ('cause you know I am SO out of practice).
Maybe its the insane Texas weather. I cannot decide if I should wear shorts or sweaters. Okay I admit it - it is rare that I wear shorts anymore. What happened to the concept of SEASONS?
I made taco soup and cornbread with green chiles and cheddar cheese - I AM READY FOR WINTER. I am even willing to skip Fall since Texas just doesn't 'get it'!
I have now missed out on three weeks of couponing. I did manage to get my newspapers today. I hope to get back into the swing of things this week.

20 YEARS???

Well this was the weekend. My 20th high school reunion. I have to admit it was more fun than I expected. It was so awesome to reconnect with people I haven't seen in MANY years. I am sad to say that there were many I had forgotten. Immediately upon seeing them though some of the memories came back. There were a few instances where I forgot things and was reminded only because someone else remembered. There were specific people that I really wanted to see and I got to see the majority of them.

It was so nice to hear how wonderful you've aged, how great you look, how sweet you are, how fond you were thought of, over and over again. That happens so rarely and to continuely hear it I just kept thinking, 'man, I could do this reunion thing again.' Most amazing to me because I came in the middle of my junior year and the whole time I was there I was dating someone that had already graduated so I didn't spend a lot of time socializing with my class. I worked with many of them at the local Pizza Hut or ran into them at parties.

It was refreshing to see that the class as a whole looked fantastic. I have to admit I think that we all looked great. We have matured, gained a few pounds a few gray hairs a few wrinkles.

There were several other observations that I made:

  • BIG hair, that 80s hair was a big topic. We all had it. Looking at the old yearbooks we almost all had the same exact hairstyle. Big, long, permed hair. The more product the better.

  • The FFA clubs are overlooked. I think those guys have turned out to be some of the most handsome. Apparently, I was distracted by the jocks and bad boys and didn't notice the farmers...whew!

  • Those that were into the party scene pretty heavy either have worn themselves out with the same behavior or were out of shape in the partying activities. One guy that should have such a high tolerence due to MUCH experience was so wiped out he was trying to talk but the words just weren't making sense.
In true THS '88 form Friday night was spent at a local bar owned by none other than one of my fellow '88 graduates. The Cunningham twins operate My Brothers' Place in Troy, IL.

Saturday evening there was a dinner and dancing at a hotel in Fairview Heights. I have to say that the dinner was really nice and the entertainment was great. We had a DJ that provided lots of great 80s music. There was even karoke which wasn't around when we were growing up. There were a few alcohol challenged individuals that gave it a shot. They throughly entertained us all.

To prove maturity there were some great examples of responsiblity. There were several couples that although they didn't live far, planned ahead and just stayed the night there at the hotel.

Almost Nostalgic

I went to two gas stations today that were selling fuel for $1.85/gallon (no typo here). Unfortunately, they were completely sold out.

I don't guess the news cast where I heard about it let everyone else in on the secret.

I did end up paying $2.88/gallon which still isn't so bad considering the near $4.00 prices lately.

A Good Day

I got new tires and an oil change.

Greg got to instruct kids on scooter safety today and he had a ball!

I finished Maggie's shadowbox from our trip to Chicago.

I witnessed my friend Heather's torture during a pedicure via phone...OMG!

My Mo cat is a Mama's boy and I LOVE it!

The 20-year reunion uniforms came today and they look great.

Monday, October 6, 2008

Today I sent Gregory off to start on his second retirement.

We laughed about this picture because it is almost as symbolic as the one his mother took the first day of school on the steps outside of his kindergarten classroom. I love that photo, because he is just so cute with his brown lunch sack in his hand.

Saturday, October 4, 2008

I can't believe it either

Yep, its been 20 years and I'll be going to STL for my reunion. After much thought about what to wear, I've finally settled on an 80's appropriate fashion item and to date one of my favorite pieces of clothing...thank God for tshirts!

Wonderful news

Greg will start his new job on Monday. Here is another example of what a great police officer does:

One Highland Village Police Officer received a surprise during the ceremony when it was announced that the two law enforcement offices in the new building (Children’s Advocacy Center of Denton County) will be named in honor of her. Leal said an anonymous donor gave $20,000 in honor of Corporal April Roppollo. “We thought it would be fitting to give the two law enforcement offices for her. Corporal Roppollo is a volunteer with the Center and gives of her time when she is not on duty. She is also constantly talking to people in Highland Village and the surrounding area about the Center. She is very passionate about our cause. She has been able to raise money for the Center, when not on duty, that has helped us to provide direct services to the kids. She was instrumental in soliciting donations for a Bicycle Race competition that took place this past year with several law enforcement agencies participating in Highland Village.”

Nite Nite

Why am I just now noticing that I get a headache when I don't have enough sleep.

My date with (~~)n%dl

Greg and I do go out frequently, but I must admit that it is rare that we do anything that feels remotely like a date. On Wednesday we went to the zoo and rode the mini train through Trinity Park. The weather was beautiful! It was an enjoyable, slow-paced, laid back day.

I think I enjoyed the meer cats the most...they are just plain CUTE!!

We did see some monkeys 'doin' it'. Watching the mom's with little ones quickly divert the kiddos attention was much more entertaining.

Alligators like dead rabbits, in case you were wondering.

Dear Greg:

Since you are coming upon the end of your quasi-retirement I would like to remind you of a few things still on the 'honey do' list.

Change the light bulb in the kitchen.
Complete the repair to the water line in the front yard.
Take the Honda to the tire shop for rotate and balance of tires.

Love, your wife,
Christine

You've gotta play to win!

Well, we didn't win the lottery last night.

Just in case we ever do, believe me we wouldn't post it out on the web.

Much luck to you and US!!!

Today I...

went for a ride in Greg's new, fuel-efficient commuter vehicle for his new job.

spilled wasabi and soy sauce in my lap.

talked to my Turkeybutt.

took ANOTHER bubble bath...man do I like these!!

cleaned my contacts so I COULD wear my new glasses.

ate too many chocolate chip cookie bars.

McRibs

I hear they are back.

Seems that they come and go and have done so for many years now. I have never tried one. Apparently, they are a big enough deal that they aren't always served and when they are there is a huge advertising campaign that occurs.

My thoughts on MILK

It can never be cold ENOUGH!

I like it with ice.

I prefer skim.

Not sure what is going on with this: sometimes I wake up at night with an insane craving for it.

Oh HAPPY Day!!

Yippee...Grey's Anatomy is on tonight. It's the season premier and it gonna be two hours!

To celebrate I came home and took a bubble bath, which I haven't done in YEARS. Folded two loads of laundry and am currently baking chocolate chip cookie bars. Gotta love my simple life...

d. If they are arranging the bricks in some strange order, put them in Planning.
e. If they are throwing the bricks at each other, put them in Operations.
f. If they are sleeping, put them in Security.
g. If they have broken the bricks into pieces, put them in InformationTechnology.
h. If they are sitting idle, put them in Human Resources.

This is the Man I love ~

Letter to the Editor - Azle News
Thursday, September 18, 2008

Will miss Azle PD Lt. Greg Arrington

Dear Editor:

As I read the Azle News Sept. 4 issue, I was more disappointed than I have ever been while reading a newspaper. There are a lot of tragic events that newspapers report, but on a local level, the retirement of Azle police lieutenant Greg Arrington tops most.

Arrington has been one of the most amazing public servants the Azle community has ever been blessed with. He is honorable, dedicated, and a great friend to the youth. When I was a young teen at Azle High School, I met him and within an instant, he became a role model and, more importantly, a mentor for me.

His passion for youth is something that Azle will find difficult to match and nearly impossible to beat. His service to this community is a debt we can never repay. He has made an impact on the lives of so many, and was able to convince young people that he was on their side – something that is rare in a police officer. (An officer being on the youth’s side is not rare, but one that can get the youth to believe that, now that is rare.)

Through programs like HADIT, DARE, SWEAT, Shattered Dreams, and simply through his passion, this man has affected many lives.

On behalf of this community, I would like to publicly thank Lt. Arrington. The impact of his efforts in Azle is like a rock being thrown into a giant lake: the ripples grow larger and larger, and last forever.

I wish the leaders of this community would do whatever it takes to keep him around. On a personal note, Lt. Arrington has played a major role in who I am today and what I have become. Through mentors and role models like Lt. Greg Arrington, I have set my life on track to make a difference and I have been successful in life due to their influence.

I am sorry to see Greg Arrington leave, but I wish him the best with this new chapter in his life. And for everything he has done, I thank him.

My babies

Here they are. They haven't had photos taken in awhile. They haven't changed all that much. Mo is quite hefty and Eeny-meeny is still a petite little angel.

Greg isn't so crazy about them at the moment. Apparently, their schedules are off a little and they start the Kitty Olympic track and field relays at about 2 am.

Note: Yes, Mo is taking a nap. Afterall he just finished reading the latest garbage in the local paper and he is plumb worn out.

But they are still so darn cute!

Flower Power

This was a new endeavor. I thought I did okay, so I made a couple of them.

Mo, did inspect my work and he does approve. He is really frustrated though that the arrangement is not for his personal amusement.

Andy Rooney is a really smart guy

As I grow in age, I value women over 40 most of all. Here are just a few reasons why:

A woman over 40 will never wake you in the middle of the night and ask, 'What are you thinking?' She doesn't care what you think. If a woman over 40 doesn't want to watch the game, she doesn't sit around whining about it. She does something she wants to do, and it's usually more interesting.

Women over 40 are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant. Of course, if you deserve it, they won't hesitate to shoot you if they think they can get away with it. Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know what it's like to be unappreciated. Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a woman over 40.

Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 40 is far sexier than her younger counterpart. Older women are forthright and honest. They'll tell you right off if you are a jerk if you are acting like one. You don't ever have to wonder where you stand with her. Yes, we praise women over 40 for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately, it's not reciprocal. For every stunning, smart, well-coiffed, hot woman over 40, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some 22-year old waitress. Ladies, I apologize.

For all those men who say, 'Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?', here's an update for you. Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage. Why? Because women realize it's not worth buying an entire pig just to get a little sausage!

My observation of Chicago

  1. Extremely diverse, which I LOVE!
  2. Awesome people-watching venue!!!
  3. Very dirty, with the exception of the beautiful parks.
  4. Side walks need major work!
  5. WAY too many panhandlers/beggers. We were seated inside an ice cream shop and one came in going from table to table asking for money.
  6. There is an abundance of 'artsy' folks in this town. Artsy to me is no excuse for bad hygiene and poor hair color.
